[The following is a note on Gearoid O'Donnell as it appeared in the Warpcon XXVIII booklet.]
We were deeply sad to hear that our friend Gearoid O'Donnell passed away on the 9th of January, after living a fulfilled and courageous life with Muscular Dystrophy. While his time among us feels far too short, Gearoid filled his years with fun and worked hard to share his deep love of games with others. As far back as when he was a student in Colaiste Dun Iascaigh in Cahir, Gearoid founded the school's chess club, which still exists today. As a student in UCC, Gearoid was a very active member of WARPS. He was auditor of the society from 2005 - 2006 and was a committee member of both WARPS and Warpcon for most of his years at university. Despite the complexities he faced when travelling, he was a regular at gaming events across the island of Ireland. After leaving UCC, Gearoid continued to promote and share his love of tabletop gaming by setting up the Cork Games Guild and by helping to organise the boardgames convention Hexacon. Gearoid helped to instill a love of gaming in a whole generation of UCC WARPS members and beyond. Gearoid was a great friend, with a keen wit, a capacity for real sincerity, a willingness to share his passions with others, and above all, he was just such a lovely guy. Despite the difficulties he faced throughout his life, he always had a smile on his face (well, as long as he was winning!). His presence will be deeply missed at Warpcon and we'll raise a glass in his honour.
