It's the right season for LARPing in the fresh air once again, so it's time to drop a quick progress mail to ye all regarding Midway - the LARP that combines airsoft guns, rubber swords and political intrigue into one delicious lump.

We've been going since September 2009 now, running usually monthly on Friday nights. We take on board new players quite frequently, and most everyone finds us a friendly bunch. While we have roundabout 85 players "on the books" our usual Friday night turnout is 25-35. We've run games at the HRTA airsoft site in Swords, and when that closed recently we moved to Red Barn, also in Swords.

It's a great time to climb aboard - we've just published our dates for the next six months and there are two "residential" weekends planned in July and September. There's no need to have played previously in order to attend these, so if Friday nights don't suit you, come along for the weekend.

To give you an idea of what we do we've recently updated our website with some new photos from older events as well as a detailed recap of what's happened so far in the game.

What Is Midway?

Midway is an ongoing LARP set in a post-apocalyptic world. It is unlike other LARPs you might have played in that it uses both rubber swords (like the LT or other UK LRP games) and airsoft (like you might have used for weekend "skirmish" games) for combat resolution - combat isn't all we do, but there's a certain element of it inherent in the game. Some of our players hide behind a wall rather than get into combat. Others play full-time soldiers.

Where can I find out more?

Come and visit us online to check out rules at http://www.midwaylrp.com or follow us on Twitter @MidwayLRP - you can also find our discussion forum on IrishGaming.Com... http://www.irishgaming.com/forum

If you have a specific question, fire it at the GM team - team@midwaylrp.com

We'd love to hear from you!

I have the tapatalk app(android) and am having trouble finding rpg forums that it works with. Since tapatalk seems unable or unwilling to list sites that tapatalk works with, I thought the easiest way to do it is to ask you chaps. So, anyone use tapatalk to access rpg forums and if so which ones?

Thanks chaps ;-)

Roleplaying at boards.ie » Dungeons and Dragons

Hi all!

Looking to get into playing dungeons and dragons so after some research I decided the best thing for me to do is purchase the famous "red box" from the dnd essentials line.

So, after going to every shop I could think of in Dublin city, I turned my attention once again to the Internet. The Americans can get the red box for about $16 from Walmart but amazon uk are selling it for £56!!! Does anyone know of any store in Ireland (north or south) that sells this item? Or has anyone purchased it online and could you recommend a website?

Step 2 after I get the starter kit is find some friends who are also beginners and would like to start a dnd "support group"!

Thanks for any feedback

Hallo.

A few months ago some friends of mine who do the convention circuit here and abroad a lot got together and decided to try making a free quarterly magazine to cover gaming across Ireland and the UK. They brought a bunch of people together, formed a plan, worked their arses off and, well, The Gazebo Issue #1 is available now. It's kinda shiny, and there's a lot of interesting stuff in there, covering most gaming topics; a couple of reviews, a few wargaming battle reports, interviews, articles on steampunk and corsets and setting mining and plenty more.

Go on, give it a look, let us know what you think, or if you'd like to contribute to the next issue, by contacting gazebo.ezine at gmail.com, or looking us up on Facebook/Google+.

Thanks to Raphael and Rev Hellfire for giving me the go ahead to plug this. <3333

hi,

just putting this out there at present to try and judge everyones view. just moved to the limerick area from the uk where ive been spending many happy and somewhat crazy years involved in vampire and werewolf larp. however arriving in the area now i find myself slightly shocked by the lack of any larp groups...

nearest one being cork, im sure given the right chance limerick could have one running rather well.

so ive decided if i am unable to find one i am in need of starting one up..

spoken to camarilla ireland and they state we need at least 6 people involved including in those 6 people are a couple of story tellers.

are there any experienced story tellers out there who are available and interested in helpng to set up a limerick larp group..

likewise are there any larp players out there interested in getting involved

Currently playing a Dark Heresy Campaign using http://www.infrno.net/

Infrno let's players use a virtual game table so you can play from the comfort of your own home.

The Campaign is only a few missions in, it's extremely fun.
We're working under a Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, the game is being run by "Da Bounca" and he's doing a seriously great Job.

We're going to be loosing a player soon, so we're looking to recruit one or two sound people.
We like to play a lot, once or twice a week, because we're using Infrno it's not a chore having time to do so :)
looking for people who are extremely interested in playing, who really love the 40k universe and have a wealth of knowledge in regards to how it works.
If you think you might be interested or want to ask any questions please let me know!

Just wondering would there be interest in setting up a remote play group here?
Not a play by forum, but some sort of live set-up using webcams and shared work areas?

Roleplaying at boards.ie » What is the best edition of D&D / AD&D?

I started playing D&D back in the '80's - You know the one - boxed set with "Module B2 - The Keep On The Borderlands". Moved on to AD&D, then 2nd edition, 3rd, 3.5, and now 4th.

Is it just me or have the editions been getting worse? The game seems to have degenerated into a tabletop version of WoW!

If you ask me, the best edition ever was the first AD&D. The one with the big red efrit on the DM's Guide cover and the most Gary Gygax input. Nothing was dumbed down and the radical christian lobby in the US hadn't gotten their paws on the core rule books (so there was some gratuitous "side-boob" art work eg. Succubus in the Monster Manual).

What do you think?

Roleplaying at boards.ie » Rap-battle type combat in RPGs.

I've had a great idea, or i might have nicked it from some other forum. In fact i'm pretty sure it's nicked, but anyway i was browsing aimlessly through various comic-y, rpg-y type forums and threads when i began thinking how cool it would be to enter into a more realistic combat type situation rather than sit rolling dice or what not. Take a look at this and then tell me i'm wrong,

This is a battle between Cyberwolf77(yeah, it's him...) and Squirrel Girl,
Quote:

Cyberwolf looks like the easy victor here, but looks are oft deceiving.
Squirrel Girl has many powers, most importantly hazelnut flavoured lips. The lip flavouring has little bearing on this match, it's just very important.

Squirrel Girl can out maneuver (I hate spelling that word and I feel firefox dictionary has once again let me down) Cyberwolf using her jumping and other squirrel like abilities. She has enhanced strength and other attributes, but I reckon Cyber may have her in the strength department. His claws look more formidable than hers but she can still deliver a sting.

If she called upon the squirrels I think Cyberwolf would just eat them.

But Squirrel Girl wins. Why, when it seems all is stacked up against her? Well, tournie tricksters, let me tell you.

It is well known that a werewolf's strengths and skills are of a natural sort, which is why metals such as silver can prove so fatal to their general workings. By cybering himself up Cyberwolf may have increased certain skills and gained some amounts of armour, but he has ultimately interrupted the natural skills that make him a deadly predator. Think of Wolverine when he had the adamantium stripped from him... they discovered it was holding back his natural abilities for so long, and the effect would be even worse with a werewolf such as Cyberwolf. So I think in this regard we shouldn't heap too much praise on Cyber's skills. If it was animal on animal I'd have given squirrelzy less chance, but in his diminished capacity I think wolfie is but another Doom waiting to happen.

The second point not yet mentioned is the Lesser Spotted Greater Latverian Sabre Squirrel, a prehistoric ancestor of the modern squirrel, who often stands (on it's hind feet) up to 5foot tall. They're dark of colour with developed claws, large serrated teeth and a jaw strength that can crack skulls. While off-shoots became smaller and adapted to tree-living and nut munching in order to survive attacks from predators, the LSGLSS grew larger, stronger and faster and is now quite happy leaping from a log and taking out a lone wolf that has strayed away from the pack.
Squirrel Girl will summon the LSGLSS to deal major damage to Cyberwolf while the more regular squirrels distract and confuse Wolfie. Squirrel girl will ultimately dash his brains out with her knuckle spikes and super squirrel strength.

If for some bizarre reason Cyberwolf survives.... Squirrel will just hide high, wait for him to change into a more human form and then give him the thrashing of his life.

+1 Squirrel Girl!
Original thread link here.
Now i know we've all seen this type of thing on boards and elsewhere before but just think of the possibilities.

No dice for a start. But more importantly, a more realistic way of doing battle in your RPGs(even solo ones). Just picture the characters in your minds eye - relax - breath deeply - and let rip...

It's kind of like a guided argument or maybe a type of thought experiment gone awry or something. Well, you get the idea.

What do you think. Is this genius or what?
