(Though admittedly 2 posts to explain it looks bad!).<br /><br />The biggest safety I tried to put in place for it to keep simple is the isolated ruleset. With this rule it means only the hostage/target andvthe hostage taker/assassin need to worry about these rules, they in no way affect anyone else. Another benefit is that it explicitly cant be used in combat, so there is no need to remember new rules in the heat of the battle, it will most likely be just two people alone, and at worst the target (who we assume wasnt vexpecting this) can Ooc whisper for a quick reminder of the rule.<br /><br />Additionally there aren't many ways the situation can go, there are only 3 calls and the nature of the calls (knife, blunt or gun) are reasonably self explanatory.<br /><br />In regards to not wanting the game to become too pvp I understand but disagree, I think the option to go pvo allows the game more freedom, I think this is where the honour system should come in, players should not be using the rule for the ooc fun of racking up kills, they should use it in genuine situations where their character would do so. Take the preacher as a character (hope that's ok with r4ph, I'm just using him because he is dead) he wouldn't use the rule ever, at the biggest push maybe he would take a bandit hostage to free some children. So the honour is in being true to your character.<br /><br />In regatds to power levels again you have to rely (realistically) on the fact that for good people to survive they need to depend on each other and fight those who aren't together.<br /><br />Ps sorry for any typos, on my tablet.<br /><br />Edit: again just to add this is again just theoretical ramblings and debate, I am not proposing nick implement this.]]></content:encoded>

In airsoft this is an honour system - it's often much worse to be captured than killed. This solution won't provide a way to assassinate, but it will help with PCs ignoring the threat of being killed. And it's simple.<br /><br />Alternatively, we can hope that the games doesn't turn too PvP*, and have an ASSASSINATE call reserved for NPC use only. That would mean that we don't have to learn lots of new rules, and Nick could inform the person playing the NPC what limits or restrictions he wants to apply. All we'd need to know is that if someone hits with that call the victim goes straight to DYING. (I'd guess that normal EXECUTE rules would then apply.)<br /><br />*Although the potential for in-fighting is important, and I have worried before that the massive power gap between PCs could eventually become a problem.]]></content:encoded>

Now they have entered hostage situation.<br /><br /> ---- a) Doc turns and tries to resist and John (with his cudgel) calls out “Blunt Strike”, the Doc collapses (unconscious for 300 seconds). Johnny now knows that the Doc won’t be able to help his enemy so he slips out quietly and walks slowly and calmly out of town and into the wilds.<br /><br /> ---- b)Doc decides that he doesn’t want to die so he does as he is told, however when Johnny goes to leave afterwards (takes a step more than a foot from the Dr) the hostage situation ends and they could both enter combat as normal.<br /><br /> ---- c)John decides that it’s best to make his escape so he orders the Doc to walk in front of him (no more than touching distance) and slowly tries to walk out of the village without attracting attention. Too late! He is spotted and a guard tells him to drop his gun, John hides behind the Doc and starts backing towards the exit. The guard (thinking himself a crack shot) aims at Johns hand and fires, unfortunately he hits the Doc. This does ONLY a single point of damage, the guard is NOT involved in the hostage situation and so he can not  kill the Doc in one hit, the Doc (thanks to his endurance) is now down to only 1 HP and the guard now has a healthy respect for the danger of shooting around hostages. John backs out of the village and turns and runs.<br /><br /><br />(S2) Dave is running towards a bandit with his knife and the bandit is desperately trying to get a shot off at him, Dave dodges brilliantly and gets his knife against the bandit’s neck. This is a SINGLE attack and does NOT count as a hostage situation as the two were already engaged in combat.<br /><br /><br />(S3) Deciding that he should be in charge Frank sneaks into the Mayors room at night, he presses his knife against the Mayors neck and whispers “Knife Kill”, the Mayor, QUEITLY starts his dying count. Frank – knowing it’s all or nothing-  waits anxiously in his room for the count to finish so he can be assured the Mayor is dead. Once the count finishes (and the Mayor is dead) Frank slips from the room unseen and beds down for the night, waiting for the Mayors body to be found.<br /><br /><br />(S4) Deciding that he should be in charge Frank sneaks into the Mayors room at night, he presses his PISTOL against the Mayors neck and whispers “Gun Kill”, the Mayor, SCREAMS the word “DYING” and then quietly starts his dying count. Frank – knowing it’s all or nothing-  waits anxiously in his room for the count to finish so he can be assured the Mayor is dead. However roused by the sound of gunfire the militia break into the room and apprehend Frank, and send for a Doctor to see to the Mayor.]]></content:encoded>

Its genuinely only a random thought that I had when it was asked in the weekender thread if people would be defenceless while sleeping. So this is only a thought exercise (by which I mean somewhere for me to waffle) especially as I can’t see my character needing to avail of this!<br /><br />The current rules make allowances for striking and executing prisoners who are defenceless (i.e. wounded or bound), however there is also the case where if someone had a gun to your head, whether you are wounded or not that you would be well and truly fecked. So this concerns the idea of a hostage target.<br /><br />In “real” life you would expect a character with a gun to their head to become a VERY compliant prisoner, however in the game system if you have high endurance and armour you start calculating the fact that all you have to do is lose one hit/armour point in turning around and then it’s a fair fight (not worrying about the real world problem of your blown out brains).<br /><br />This also promotes the importance of trust, sure it’s one thing to let a character who just arrived to town have a gun during the defence of the town, but maybe you don’t trust him to have it all the time, and in contrast turning your back on a character completely would be a sure sign of trust and friendship.<br /><br />So what if there was a single “weak” spot that a character could target to enter a hostage situation? I propose (theoretically only) the back of the neck, and if the character manages to (outside regular combat) put a weapon to this point then a new set of rules take over (ONLY for the two involved in the situation. <br />The benefit of this situation would be that the aggressor in this situation is able to perform a “Kill strike” which brings the character IMMEDIATELY to dying. This means that it is able to be used to assassinate, but equally as important this knowledge means it is also realistically capable of producing a hostage who genuinely has to obey the aggressor. In order not to overbalance gameplay however it should be noted that a character who is brought to dying in this way can NOT be executed, the aggressor must wait out the 300 second count, making this a dangerous endeavour.<br /><br />The weapon used would also make a difference:<br />“Sharp Kill” – The hostage drops to the ground silently and begins a dying count. (Benefit silent kill)<br />“Blunt Strike” – The hostage is silently knocked unconscious for 300 seconds. (Benefit silent non lethal)<br />“Gun Kill” – The hostage drops to the ground and yells out “Dying” once to account for a sudden gunshot ringing out and begins a silent dying count. (Benefit: better for using hostage as a shield if you have a ranged weapon)<br /><br /><br />Some sample scenarios are presented below: (Because a single post was too big)]]></content:encoded>
